In the tiny little village of Broechem we can find one of the most impressive castles of the province Antwerp. The square keep of this castle is dominating the landscape since the 14th century when Joannes van Busco erected it. The Van Berchem dynasty became the property owner shortly after and made some changes to the castle. Guilemus van der Rijt bought it in 1544. In those days the castle was surrounded by several outbuildings that all disappeared throughout the centuries. Willem van Halmale bought the castle in 1655 and he enlarged it into the castle we can see now. Later on the castle changed numerous times between all kinds of noble families and between 1789 and 1843 it was even a religious institute. The family Charon who restored its splendor bought the castle, close to total decay, in 1952. I do not know who the present owners of the castle are but the mighty stronghold is now surrounded by a golf course and is being once again restored. It is unknown what the function will be after the restorations are complete.
