GERAAR DE DUIVELSTEEN
The castle of the Counts of Flanders may be the most impressive and well know monument in Gent but there is also this castle. This building can also be classified as a middle age fortified manor. It was built in the 13th century by Knight Gheeraert Vilain whose nickname was the devil. It remained property of the same family until 1328, then sold to the city of Gent. The castle was used for many things like knight quarters, weapon depot, monastery, school and Episcopal seminary. In 1623 it became a place where they kept the madmen and madwomen and still later, it became an orphanage. It also was used as a jail. After a thorough restoration at the end of the 19th century it is in use since 1904 as the public records office. They also added during those restorations a new wing in neo gothic style. You can find this interesting building behind the cathedral.
