The Counts and Marquises of Namen were a dynasty that played an important role in history. They build their castle on a rock where the rivers Maas and Sambre come together. As early as the 13th century there mighty castle was home of the mighty Court, presided over by Marie de Brienne, Empress of Constantinople and Countess of Namen. Besieged on a couple of occasion throughout history the castle turned in a fortified citadel and was more and more strengthened. Today the citadel is among the best-known and spectacular sites in the country. Right at its peak the current castle of Namen was erected around the year 1900 and houses a famous hotel.
