The idyllic castle Rochendaal was built in 1881 by lawyer Jean Henri Paul Ulens who was major of Sint Truiden between 1876 and 1891. He was ennobled in 1871 and ten years later he moved into his brand new castle.
Later on the castle and ground became military property and officers stayed in the castle while soldiers slept in the many buildings the military built on the domain.
The military moved out although they kept the domain. As usually an empty building is visited soon by vandals and so the castle was plundered. The structure of the castle is still solid and it is still dry inside but the interior is stripped from its splendor. A local told me that the domain is still used by the military to train dogs. So you better be careful if you want to visit this military domain.
