There was already a castle in this place during the 9th century. The Counts of Salm only stayed a short time in this castle during the 13th century.
They left the care-taking in the hands of a bailiff. During the 14th century a new castle was built on the foundations of the first one and it became
a more important stronghold for the Counts. During the 15th century the military and political importance of the castle dwindled down and it was abandoned
during the 16th century. The only thing that remains is the impressive gate building that can be viewed from the public road.
